Exploring Deeper Connections Through a South African Folk Tale

Updated: Mar 10, 2021

Illinois Holocaust Museum

PD for Educators - February 2021

In conjunction with the museum's Nelson Mandela Exhibit

Dina Kaplan, Puppeteers Without Borders, presented a South African folktale, told through shadow puppetry. Educators built shadow theaters and puppets and learnt approaches to encourage their students creativity. Together we explored the folktale themes of courage and resilience.

‘Abiyoyo’ is an old folktale from South Africa…a long time ago and far away in a village in Africa. Through puppetry and theater techniques, educators will learn approaches to explore their students’ creativity while engaging with emotions, developing empathy, and celebrating diversity.
